Ylang ylang is a yellow flower sourced from the Cananga tree and famous for its effectiveness in aromatherapy. The tree usually grows in the tropical region, including countries India, Indonesia & the Philippines. The oil extracted from ylang ylang flower is an essential oil rich in nutrients and therapeutic benefits.

Until recently, not much research has been conducted on its effectiveness though it is used throughout the world for centuries. It can boost your mood

When ylang ylang is used in aromatherapy, inhaled through breath, it can boost your mood instantly. The exquisite sweet fruity floral scent of ylang ylang oil is effective in improving mood after day-long hard work.1 A 2009 study also found that aromatherapy can help physiological mechanism and using proper oil can strengthen the effectiveness of the therapy.2


A practical method of stress relief

Aromatherapy is widely used as a stress relief formula for centuries. Recent studies also confirmed its effectiveness. When ylang ylang oil is inhaled, our olfactory interacts with our neurons and can soothe the nerves to speed up the recovery process.3

According to a research published in Phytotherapy Research in 2006, aromatherapy can also reduce stress if applied on the skin.4 Ylang ylang oil contains a high amount of linalool, an ingredient which is found to be very effective in reducing stress, especially social stress.5

Common health issues like cough, cold, and fever are found to be recovered quickly by using ylang ylang oil properly. Inhaling the oil can give a sense of relaxation and calmness. At the same time, linalool's microbial properties can enhance the healing process too. Using the oil as an aromatic solution during a massage can improve the experience and provide relief from pain due to cold & fever.


It is useful in treating common skin issues.

Common skin issues like acne and skin irritation can also be treated with ylang ylang oil when infused with a proper carrier oil. Linalool in ylang ylang oil has antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties which can offer the benefits in skincare.8


Improves sleep quality

Essential oils like ylang ylang oil are also found to effective in improving sleep quality in a 2018 study.3 Using essential oils in aromatherapy and massage therapy is effective in enhancing the quality of sleep.

Though enough studies have not been conducted on this benefit, ylang ylang oil has been used in countries like India for many years to improve sexual desire and reduce sexual anxiety. A recent study has also found using essential oils can enhance sexual motivation among women.9 It is a common belief that Ylang ylang’s exquisite fragrance plays a role in increasing intimacy among couples.
